Numerology In Tarot: What is it?

Numerology in tarot is assigning meanings to numbers and using them to enhance tarot readings. Each number carries unique energetic vibrations and symbolism, influencing the interpretation of the tarot card.

By adding numerology, tarot readers can gain insights by using unique themes assigned to each number.

This adds an extra layer of depth and meaning to tarot readings, allowing readers to uncover hidden messages, discern patterns, and offer more meaning to the question presented.

Numerology in Tarot: How to Use it?

You can use numerology as an extra layer with tarot systems (Rider Waite or Thoth) but when Marseille decks are used, it is vital.

Marseille-style tarot decks utilize pips in the Minor Arcana, which are non-illustrated cards that display only the suit symbols and the number of the card. Unlike Rider-Waite-Smith or other illustrated decks, Marseilles decks rely heavily on numerology for interpreting these pips.

For instance, the Three of Cups in a Marseilles deck may not depict celebratory scenes as in illustrated decks; instead, numerology guides the reader to interpret this card as representing harmony, cooperation, and social interactions based on the number 3’s symbolism.

Numerology acts as a bridge between the visual simplicity of pips in Marseilles-style decks and their layers of meaning. By Incorporating the elemental energy of the suits along with the numerological meaning, each card has a unique interpretation.

Different Ways to Use Numerology in Tarot

Aside from looking at the numerology of individual cards in a spread, you can look at the progression and patterns of the spread as a whole. Let’s take a deeper look.

Spread Total

In this method, add all the numbers up to get a total. Reduce the number to a single digit (example 42/ 4+2=6) This is the overall energetic message of the spread.

In addition to all the other cards in the spread, you can use the Spread Total to boost your reading and give you a general feeling or outcome to your situation or question.

Look for Patterns

After you have all your cards laid out in the spread, Look for repeating numbers or groups of high or low numbers.

Multiples of one number are significant. What number is it? What does that number mean? How does that relate to your reading?

Do you notice that all your numbers are on the lower end like twos or threes? That could symbolize that you are just at the beginning of your journey or path and that you have a ways to go. If all the numbers are on the higher side then perhaps you are closer to completion.

When looking for patterns, I believe you should rely on your intuition. There are no rules set in stone.
