The Easiest Yoga Mat Cleaner to Make at Home

Your yoga mat is your sacred space and an invaluable tool during your practice. It deserves the Best Yoga Mat Cleaner. Read on to find out how to make your own yoga mat cleaner that is simple to make and effective against dirt and germs.

Having a Clean Yoga Mat

It’s early morning and you are dressed in your usual yoga attire. You’ve pulled your hair back and you’ve finished the last of your morning tea or coffee. Glancing at your watch, you realize you’ve got to go to class. Quickly scooping up your rolled-up mat and slipping on your shoes, you are out the door and on the road.

The class has begun, and you are in the zone. Your breath and movement flow together. Exhaling deeply you bend at the waist and enter Forward Fold. You are brought out of the zone by the current state of your mat. Your yoga mat has dog hair and crumbs on it. Is that a doggie footprint?! How did you ever let your yoga mat get so dirty? You vow to clean it at the end of class. The class ends and in your rush to get back to the grind your mat gets rolled up and neglected yet again.

This happened to me so I bet it happens to some of you as well.

Let’s not forget that your mat is also where your bare feet touch and in many poses you’re face is touching those same spots. Some yoga classes may also make you sweat and that sweat ends up on your mat as well. It’s not just the visible cleanliness of your mat that matters. What is on it that you can’t see? You can see why keeping your yoga mat clean is necessary and makes your practice more enjoyable.

What’s in this Easy Yoga Mat Cleaner

There is more than one way to clean your yoga mat. I like to make this spray because it has very few ingredients, I already have them at home, it does a great job and it smells fantastic! I am much more likely to clean my mat between uses because this cleaner smells so good!

Witch Hazel – Made from the plant’s bark, Witch hazel contains tannins, a chemical compound, that acts as an astringent. Astringents remove dirt and oils.

Tea Tree Oil – This oil is considered an antimicrobial. This means it can slow the growth and or kill micro-organisms such as bacteria, viruses, protozoans, mold, and mildew.

Rosemary Oil– This oil also has antimicrobial properties. It’s used in aromatherapy to help relax, enhance concentration, and to encourage clarity of mind and insight.

Lavender Oil – Used as an antimicrobial. Also used in aromatherapy to help relax and calm.

Peppermint Oil – This oil is not used in a germ-fighting capacity. Its purpose is to promote relaxation in the body while uplifting the mood.

To ensure the most effective results I suggest you research the source of your oils carefully. Not all essential oils are created equal. I trust and highly recommend any essential oils from the company Mountain Rose Herbs.

Making Your Yoga Mat Cleaner Magical

This recipe will make an effective yoga mat cleaning solution. Here are some ways to make it work extra hard for you.

Add Crystals to your Cleaner– Choose a water-safe crystal or two to add to your cleaner. Every time you shake and spray the cleaning solution onto your mat, you activate the crystals’ chosen properties. Here are a few suggestions.

Amethyst– Spiritual Awareness, Inner peace, Healing, Meditation, Stress Relief, Communication

Clear quartz– Divine Energy, Amplification, Clarity

Rose quartz– Self Love, Friendship, Kindness,

Tiger’s Eye– Will Power, Grounding, Personal Empowerment

Use Moon Water – What is your intention for your yoga practice? Different phases of the moon can help enhance that intention. Where are you at and what are you trying to achieve? Put some water out under the phase that corresponds to your intention and add it to your Yoga Mat Cleaner. Another option is to place the filled spray bottle outside or near a window to be directly charged by the moon phase.

New Moon– This phase supports the new beginnings of any plan, idea, or activity.

Waxing Moon– This phase amplifies what you already have.

Full Moon– This is the phase of total illumination and fulfillment.

Waning Moon– This is the phase for shedding and releasing things that are not serving you.

Dark Moon– This is the phase for deep reflection and for endings.

Now you have a clean yoga mat that will allow you to fully enjoy your practice. I hope you can personalize this spray with crystals and moon water to deepen your spiritual practice as well.
