Why You Shouldn’t be Afraid of Using Oil on Your Face

Oil-free products were heavily promoted when I first started caring for my skin as a teenager. Every magazine contained advertisements for oil-free cleansers and moisturizers for acne-prone skin. At the time it made sense, If you have acne the last thing you want is oil clogging your pores. It’s safe to say I continued to have acne AND dry flaky skin. Thankfully, I have learned much since those days. Oil is an excellent part of a skin-care regimen.

Applying oil to your face after you cleanse provides many benefits to your skin. Heck, you can even cleanse your face with oil. However, that is a whole other topic.

Beneficial Effects of Using a Face Oil

  • Strengthens the skin barrier and traps moisture/ Hydrates the skin
  • Creates soft and supple skin

  • Regulates natural oil production
  • Has Anti-Inflammatory properties
  • Contains Anti-bacterial properties

  • Saves you Money

Different Types of Carrier Oils and the Benefits to Your Skin

My Herbal Face Oil Recipe requires one carrier oil that will make up most of the final product. Here are a few of the most common carrier oils and their benefits. Pick one that best suits your needs. All the oils listed have links to purchase them from Mountain Rose Herbs, my trusted source for all things natural and herbal.

Apricot Kernal Oil– This mild oil absorbs quickly and is ideal for sensitive or mature skin. It supports healthy collagen and elastin for soft and supple skin.

Argan Oil -This luxurious oil is light and absorbs into the skin quickly. It has regenerative attributes that help decrease fine lines and wrinkles. It contains antioxidants that protect against cell-damaging free radicals. Be aware that if the Aragan Oil is not deodorized it will have an order.

Hemp Seed Oil– This oil is great for dry or acne-prone skin. It is fantastic at locking in moisture. Its anti-inflammatory properties help irritated pores.

Jojoba Oil– This oil is similar to the oil your skin produces naturally called “sebum” and acts as a barrier to lock in moisture. It signals the skin to stop producing excess sebum that can clog pores. It’s rich in vitamin E which reduces hyperpigmentation and wrinkles.

Rosehip Seed Oil – Rich in Vitamin C, this oil is linked to increased collagen production. It also brightens skin and reduces the appearance of scars and wrinkles thanks to its retinoic acid. Rosehip Seed Oil absorbs quickly and leaves little to no greasy feel after being applied to the face. It’s wonderful for dry or mature skin but can be used by all skin types.

Sweet Almond Oil– Studies have shown this type of oil reduces puffiness and under-eye circles, improves skin tone, and helps dry skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. If you have a nut allergy please avoid this oil.

Before using any oil for the first time, do a patch test to make sure you don’t have an allergic reaction. Place a drop or two of the oil on your wrist or elbow. You are good to go if there are no signs of redness, itching, burning, or swelling after a few hours.

Lavender– Its aroma is not only lovely but also therapeutic. The scent provides a calming effect. It is an anti-bacterial, anti-septic which makes it great for acne-prone skin.

Chamomile– This herb is used to smooth and soften the skin. It helps with irritated skin and redness.

Rosemary– Rosemary has long been used in hair and skin health. It balances the natural sebum of the skin. It aids in soothing redness and mild irritation.

Calendula-When used topically, this herb is most noted for its ability to speed tissue healing. It’s great for dry skin and eczema. It also helps with inflammation.

How and When to Apply Your Herbal Face Oil

Squeeze a pea-sized amount of your oil onto your fingertips. I like to warm it up by rubbing my fingertips together and then patting it onto the forehead, cheeks, neck, and chin. It’s also a great lip moisturizer! Then either massage it into your skin with gentle upward strokes or use a jade roller or Gua Sha facial tool.

You can use it in the morning for an all-day glow. It can be used at night to lock in moisture. Or you can use it twice a day until your skin is happy and healthy again.

I currently use a natural Rose Quartz roller with the oil at night. My skin is hydrated and glowing when I wake up in the morning. I hope you try my Herbal Face Oil Recipe yourself and enjoy it as much as I do.
