What are the Benefits of Journaling?

If you are new to journaling, you may ask, “Why should I Journal?” If you have journaled in the past or have a reasonably consistent journaling practice you might already know the answer. Those of us who journal have experienced the benefits firsthand.

Journaling is the practice of putting thoughts onto paper. This helps you clear your mind by getting all your mental chatter out. You see your thoughts and can learn from them.

You can understand your emotions better, get to the root of what is bothering you, determine what you want out of life or from a situation, and watch yourself grow.

Pinpointing how you really feel can start the process of healing and manifestation. Journaling has many benefits.

  • Helps you sleep better
  • Reduces stress and anxiety
  • Learn from life experiences
  • Improves communication skills
  • Helps you with problem-solving
  • Helps you heal from traumatic events
  • Outlet for creativity
  • It allows you to look back into the past
  • A way to be mindful and grateful
  • Boost self-esteem
  • Find your voice

Multiple studies have been conducted on the effects of journaling and found that it is good for your mental health and in some cases physical health as well.

7 Simple Rituals to Add to Your New Moon Practice

Working with the lunar cycle for self-reflection involves aligning your introspective practices with the different phases of the Moon. Here’s a brief explanation of how to work with each phase:

New Moon: During the New Moon, create a sacred space for self-reflection. Take time to set intentions for self-growth and self-discovery. Engage in journaling, meditation, or contemplative practices to explore your inner landscape, desires, and areas for personal development.

Waxing Crescent Moon: As the Moon starts to grow, use this phase to take action on your self-reflection. Implement new habits or practices that support your personal growth goals. Reflect on your progress and acknowledge any shifts or changes you’ve experienced since the New Moon.

First Quarter Moon: The First Quarter Moon is a time of challenges and decision-making. Reflect on any obstacles or internal conflicts that arise during this phase. Journal about any inner dilemmas or choices you need to make in order to align with your true self. Use this phase to gain clarity and make decisions that honor your authentic path.

Waxing Gibbous Moon: During the Waxing Gibbous phase, reflect on your journey and the progress you’ve made. Take time to acknowledge your achievements and the growth you’ve experienced. Engage in self-reflection practices that help you refine your understanding of yourself and your desires.

Full Moon: The Full Moon is a powerful time for self-reflection and inner illumination. Use this phase to delve deep into your emotions and subconscious patterns. Journal about any emotional patterns or beliefs that are holding you back. Engage in practices such as meditation, dream analysis, or energy healing to gain insights into your inner world.

Waning Gibbous Moon: As the Moon starts to wane, reflect on the lessons learned during the lunar cycle—Journal about the transformations and realizations that have emerged. Take time for self-care and reflection to integrate the insights gained and prepare for the next cycle of self-reflection.

By consciously working with the lunar cycle for self-reflection, you can deepen your self-awareness, gain clarity, and make conscious choices that align with your true self.

What You Need to Start a Moon Journal

Moon journaling can be as simple or ritualistic as you want it to be. In its simplest form, all you need is:

1. A NoteBook This can be a $1 spiral notebook or a handcrafted leather-bound journal. I prefer a pretty but inexpensive notebook. If it’s too nice then I become afraid to make mistakes and then it doesn’t really become useful for me.

Make it your own though. If something really nice is what makes you excited to journal, go for it.

There is a journal for every aesthetic and every budget.

2. A Pen or Pencil Some people have a certain brand, thickness, or color of pen that they prefer. You may even want to use colored pencils, markers, stickers, stamps, or whatever! You can just use words or you can draw.

It can be a beautiful and creative outlet but it doesn’t have to be. You just need something to write with. In the long run, the simpler it is the more likely you’ll keep up the practice.

There are no rules when it comes to journaling. You can write full sentences, poetry, draw doodles, or just jot down individual words that pop into your head. This isn’t for anybody but you. It doesn’t even have to be legible.

3. A Way to Determine the Moon Phase I have an App on my cell phone that tells me the current phase of the moon and the zodiac sign that it’s in. It’s called My Moon Phase and you can find it here. Or in the Google Play store.

I highly recommend The Magic Of I Planner. It tells you the moon’s phase and what sign it is in every day. Plus, it has loads of other astrological aspects and information. You could even turn it into your Moon Journal if you’d like. It’s also very beautiful. Check it out here.

A simple wall calendar like this one has the new, full, and half moons listed. This Magical Moons Calendar by Llewellyn has great extras in it as well. It lists each month’s color, crystal, and animal correspondences for each month. Along with the basic zodiac sign information.

Books, Books, Books!

There are so many wonderful books out there to provide inspiration. I highly recommend, Moonology: Working with the Magic of the Lunar Cycle by Yasmin Boland. Any astrology book will work too.

Tarot or Oracle Cards

Pull a Tarot or Oracle card to inspire you or help you answer journal prompts.

Stickers, Washi Tape, Collage art Supplies

Add color and interest to your journal by decorating it. Draw or doodle. Add cute stickers and add photos from online or magazines. Dress it up as much as you want or keep it simple. I personally, just use colored markers and that’s about as fancy as I get.

A Delicious New Moon Tea or Drink!

Pour yourself a drink and let’s get comfy and cozy while we journal. Here is an amazing herbal tea you can make at home designed just for the New Moon phase.

Moon Journaling

How Can Journaling with the Moon Help You Reflect?

Journaling with the moon can be a transformative practice that aids in deep self-reflection. As the moon waxes and wanes, its gentle presence becomes a symbolic mirror, illuminating our inner landscape.

By aligning our journaling practice with the moon’s phases, we can establish a rhythm that corresponds to our emotional and energetic cycles.

This symbiotic relationship between journaling and the moon fosters self-awareness, offering a sacred space for self-reflection, personal growth, and inner transformation.

Phases of the Moon Journaling

For a detailed breakdown of the 8 Phases of the Moon visit my post called:

The 8 Phases of the Moon and How to Use Them for Personal Goal Setting. This has a lovely breakdown of what each phase is, what order they are in, and how you use the energy of each phase.

The Moon has a small gravitational pull on Earth and it is easily visible if you look at the tides of the ocean and seas. Our bodies are 70% water. The Moon has sway on us too if we are open to it. In Astrology, the Moon controls our emotions, our subconscious, and our intuition.

The moon goes through 8 separate phases and then repeats the cycle. It is in each phase for 3-5 days. Each Phase covers different aspects of life and emotions. By journaling through the moon phases you can cover in depth how you feel about yourself, your ambitions, and your current life.

Moon Journaling as a Daily Practice

Making this a daily practice will help you determine how each Phase of the moon makes you feel. If you journal every day you will begin to notice patterns. Perhaps the new moon makes you feel sluggish and low energy. Or maybe you lose your temper more during the time that the moon is in the fire signs. It’s a really great way to reflect on your own personal cycles.

Every day, note in your journal the Phase of the moon and the sign that it is in. Write for 5-10 minutes about what you are feeling or just write for as long as it takes you to fill up 3 pages of your journal. Experiment with what you like and find what works for you. Then just stick with it.

New Moon Journaling

Each New Moon Phase is a time to manifest and start new things. It’s a good time to figure out what changes you would like to see in your life or within yourself. By following the moon through the zodiac cycle you can cover and reflect on every aspect of your life.

Each month, there is a new moon in a new zodiac sign. Over the course of the year, you can reflect on and focus on all areas of your life. Think how much growth you can accomplish, and how much positive change you can make internally and externally.

Each month set an intention or manifestation based on the zodiac sign the new moon is in.

Journal about it. What is it? What does it look like when that intention has been reached? How do you feel? How will you be changed?

Below are journaling prompts to help you reflect on your intentions for each sign of the zodiac.
