7 Simple Rituals to Add to Your New Moon Practice

Do you want to know more about the New Moon phase? if you love spotting the Moon in the sky but don’t know how to incorporate it into your spiritual practice this post is for you. Read on to learn 7 Simple rituals to add to your New Moon Practice.

Why Have a New Moon Practice?

Many civilizations from all over the world throughout history noticed the Moon and the phases that it goes through. It was a way to mark the passage of time.

Aside from its practical uses, It has symbolic significance as well. The Moon does not produce its own light. It is a reflection of the Sun’s light. The Moon is thought to represent the emotional or subconscious parts of ourselves. The Moon is associated with the water element and the feminine.

Moon Phases

The Moon phase reflects the cyclical nature of life. The new Moon is seen as the first phase of the moon’s cycle. I associate this cycle with the first sliver of the moon visible after the Dark Moon. It represents the aspect of new beginnings and rebirth.

As it progresses from the new Moon to the full Moon, it is symbolic of the period of growth and fruition.

While the Moon progresses from the full to the waning phases, energy decreases. It’s a time to let go and release things that no longer serve you.

The Dark Moon represents the phase of death. This is when the moon is not reflecting any light at all.

The New Moon is a time of beginnings and is seen as a time to start something fresh. Acknowledging the new moon is a way to celebrate the feminine side of yourself or to focus on an intention that you would like to embody or bring forth.

In conclusion, the New Moon can be a time to bring about new things into your life and bring about change by way of using the new Moon’s energy. All you need is an intention and a simple ritual connected to this time of the Moon phase.

When is the New Moon?

There is a new Moon every 29.5 days. It is after the period when the Moon goes fully dark and it is when a small crescent begins to appear. The New Moon happens when the Sun and Moon are conjunct or right next to each other in the sky. If the Sun is in say, Libra, the New Moon will also be in Libra.

All sorts of apps or online calendars can help you keep track of the current Moon phase or tell you the date of a certain Moon phase. I use the Magic of I planner. Not only does list all the new and full Moon dates but it has tons of astrological transits and planet retrograde dates as well. It is beautiful and so very helpful to keep up with the movements of the planets, the Sun, and the Moon. Get your copy here.

7 Simple Things to Enhance Your New Moon Practice

A new Moon practice can be as simple as writing your intention down or it can be as elaborate as you want. Here is a list of ways that you can create a new Moon practice or add to the one you already have. Your new Moon practice is all your own. You don’t have to do any of these or you can do them all in any order you’d like. It’s all up to you.

Make Moon Water

As mentioned earlier, the Moon is associated with the element of water. At the time of the new Moon put out a jar, bowl, or bottle of water. I like to have a lid or cap on my container to keep out critters and debris. Set your intention and place it out overnight to be charged by the energy of the new Moon.

If you can’t or don’t want to put it outside, place it by a window. It works just as well.

Use the water in various ways throughout the month and be reminded of your intention as you use it. You can use moon water in several ways:

Water your plants

Use the water in an oil diffuser

Add it to homemade cleaning products

Add it to your bathwater

Moon water costs nothing! It is perfect for anyone and you can make as much or as little Moon water as you wish.

Meditate at the New Moon

If you don’t already meditate, try it during your New Moon ritual. Sit in a quiet place. You can sit on the ground, on a cushion, or a chair.

If you are sitting in a chair plant both feet on the flat on the ground. If you are on the ground or a cushion make sure you can sit comfortably. It helps if you can sit with your hips above your knees. Sit up tall. You want your spine straight and your shoulders open.

Light an incense or scented candle. Close your eyes and visualize yourself living your intention. Focus on your breath and chant your intention out loud or in your head. Sit still and redirect your thoughts back to your intention when your mind wanders. It’s ok if it does. That is natural.

After you are done, open your eyes. Thank Spirit for that quiet moment. Meditation doesn’t have to be long but it should be consistent for the best results.

Cleanse Yourself During the New Moon

Take a special shower or bath as part of your new Moon ritual. Light candles. Add aroma therapy to enhance your experience. Use your best scrubs and soaps. Deep condition your hair. Think of your intention as you sit in your bath or as the water washes over you. Imagine that your old ways are being removed allowing space for your intention to root inside you.

It is about getting rid of the old to make room for the new and improved.

Charge Crystals During the New Moon

Crystals are a beautiful way to have a physical representation of your intention. Pick a crystal to represent your intention. You can pick one by the color or by the spiritual meaning associated with it. There are so many books on crystals out there. Each crystal has meanings associated with it.

Charge it with your intention. Hold the crystal in your hands and imagine you are infusing it with your energy and the energy of your intention. Place it outside or by a window and charge it with the new Moon.

Whatever crystal you choose, you can then carry it around with you or place it somewhere so that when you see it you are reminded of the meaning you put into it.

Do a New Moon Tarot or Oracle Spread

Tarot or Oracle cards are a great way to tap into your subconscious. You can buy these decks online, at a bookstore, or from your local metaphysical shop.

Pick a deck with artwork that you find appealing. If you want you can work with different decks for different reasons. Let me warn you if you aren’t careful you can end up with a whole bookcase full of different decks! Shuffle the cards and place them in the corresponding position described in the spread you are using. Most decks have guidebooks to help you understand the cards’ meaning.

You can use the spread to help you understand how to manifest your intention or allow it to help you find the intention that is most beneficial for you this month. The limits are endless.

Make the most of this experience by setting the mood. Adjust the lighting, light a fragrant candle. grab a cup of tea, and play soft music. Make the space exactly what you need and let the messages flow.

Pinterest has a wealth of spreads to choose from or you can make your own. You can also just go with what your intuition is telling you. Look at the picture and go with your gut. Meanings can be gained intuitively by just looking at the illustration.

Journal During the New Moon

I love to journal. Putting your thoughts on paper helps clear them from your mind. The thoughts become clearer and easier to understand. It allows them to take up space, be processed, and then released. I feel mental clarity after journaling. If you are journaling about your intention. Write about it as if it already has happened, like you are already living it.

Journaling about your New Moon Tarot or Oracle spread is also a great way to process the message and then you can go back to it later as many times as you want.

I created a Tarot Journal just for this purpose. Click here to buy my 3-Card Tarot Spread journal. It has over 100 blank spreads for you to record and reflect on your New Moon tarot readings.

Moon Salutations Yoga Sequence

Unlike the Sun Salutations yoga sequence, the Moon salutations sequence was designed to cool and calm the nervous system and it is designed with the needs of the female body in mind. All the postures are beneficial for mensuration, pregnancy, and menopause. It also flows from side to side. It is reminiscent of the cyclical phases of the Moon.

Because it is calming, it is perfect for performing at night before bed. Do it while looking out of a window and focusing on your intention for the new Moon. I was introduced to this amazing flow by the book “Moon Salutations: A Women’s Journey through Yoga to Healing, Power, and Peace”. I highly recommend reading it yourself.

Here is an easy visual of the Moon Salutation steps. To best incorporate your breath, inhale as you open or expand your body. Exhale as you bend or lower to the ground. Repeat the flow as many times as you’d like. To end the practice lay on the ground on your back in corpse pose.

I hope you found these options helpful and perhaps take one and make it your own.
