The Psychic Art of Tarot: Book Review
Mat Auryn is a tarot reader, occult teacher, and award-winning author of Psychic Witch. I loved both his books, Psychic Witch and Mastering Magic.
So when I found out he was coming out with a book devoted to the art of tarot, I pre-ordered that so fast! I was excited to see what he could teach me about tarot. Trust me, he didn’t disappoint.
About the Book
Mat Auryn’s The Psychic Art of Tarot isn’t your typical guide to tarot card meanings; it’s a hands-on, experiential manual for developing psychic abilities through tarot.
The Psychic Art of Tarot is a thoughtfully written book that contains over 265 pages of Psychic Tarot insight. It was published by Llewellyn and was released in September of 2024.
It has 10 chapters that cover a wide range of topics about giving readings, meeting your tarot spirit guide, using tarot for mediumship, meditation, explanation of what it means to be psychic, identifying your psychic strengths and so much more!
What This Book is Not
What you won’t find in this book is a set of Tarot Card meanings. Matt explicitly says at the beginning that this book is for people who already have a basic understanding of tarot cards and their meanings. The tarot system isn’t explained. There is no talk of the symbolism, suits, minor and major arcana, or astrology behind each card. In that sense, I would say this book is tailored to an intermediate-level tarot reader.
What You Can Learn
What is in this book is a great introduction to psychic abilities and how to use them with tarot readings. It also does a fantastic job of giving real-life explanations. The author’s first-hand experience follows every topic. In one instance, Mat shares how he helped his querent find their missing bird without even being told their bird was lost. All because he listened to his intuition and wasn’t afraid to be wrong.
Let’s also not forget the 78 exercises provided to help strengthen and further the reader’s knowledge and understanding of the psychic art of tarot. a few examples are :
- Wells of Power Evaluation Spread (helps you explore your connection to Divine Energy, Terrestrial Energy, Celestrial Energy, and Personal Vital Energy.
- Automatic Writing with Tarot– (To Help you Give Better Self-Readings)
- Understanding Your Psychic Learning Style– (Determining Your PreDisposed Psychic Style based on your Learning Style)
- Your Mental Tarot Deck (Gaining Guidance without a Deck in Your Hands)
What I found most interesting
One of the many topics that I found intriguing is found in Chapter 2 Energetic Foundations. Here it is discussed the idea of your hands as an energy center and how you can awaken and connect to them. This will make you more sensitive to the energy of the cards, furthering your connection and enhancing your intuition. Mat provides three whole exercises to practice this topic!
What I love about this book
I have read plenty of books on witchcraft, energy work, nature spirits, and the occult and I found myself wishing Mat would go deeper on some of these topics. However, that is not his goal.
In his introduction, he writes, “In this book, we’ll approach the tarot with a sense of reverence for its rich history while also advocating for a more expansive, intuitive engagement with the cards.” He wants you to get out of the book and get a deck in your hand. That’s what I love about his books. He provides you with so many hands-on experiences. You can only learn so much from a book. You really start learning once you put the book down and start working hands-on.
So if you want a book that explains in detail every aspect of the psychic realm and the scientific phenomenon of how it works, this is not the book for you. If you want to experience it first-hand and learn how to improve your skills for tarot readings, this is the book for you.
Book Review Conclusion
This book did not disappoint. This book is like no other I have in my Tarot Collection. It not only has information that I haven’t read in other books but it gives me an extensive amount of hands-on exercises that I can use to enhance my personal connection to the Tarot, awaken my dormant psychic abilities, and improve my intuitive Tarot skills.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has a basic understanding of Tarot as a system and the meaning of the cards and wants to explore opening up their psychic abilities while doing tarot readings.
